Funeral services will be Friday for Lela Geneva Gillespie Shoup, 98, of Stillwater. She died Sept. 8, 2016 in Stillwater. She was 98.
Services will be held 10:30 a.m. Friday at Strode Funeral Home in Stillwater. Visitation will be 7-8:30 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home.
Lela was born Aug. 29, 1918, in Ripley to Oren Kessler Gillespie and Lettie Mae Hesser Gillespie. She was raised on the family farm south of Ripley.
She attended Ripley Schools for 12 years and graduated as valedictorian of her senior class of 1936.
On Nov. 13, 1937, she married Herbert Shoup. They had four children, Floyd Neal, Ann, Herbert Jr. and Mary.
Herb and Lela spent 24 years on the farm south of Ripley, where they raised their children. From 1961-1975 the couple lived in Bethany, where Herb worked for the Oklahoma Farmers Union Insurance Company.
In 1975, they retired to Antlers, where they lived until 1991, when they moved back to the Ripley area.
Lela was active as a member of the Ripley “Know You Better Club” and as a member of the Ripley United Methodist Church, where she held many offices and served in many capacities.
Lela’s first and primary priority was her family. She spent the majority of her life as a homemaker, supporting her children and her husband in their ventures. She will be remembered for her cooking, homemade bread and jellies. She was an accomplished seamstress and crocheter.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; and sons, Floyd and Herbert Jr. She is survived by daughters, Ann and Mary; one sister, Bula Fonda and husband Clifford Boyles; nine grandchildren; many great- and great-great-grandchildren; as well as many nieces and nephews.
