Robert Carlton “Bob” Abshier, a long-time Cushing business owner, died Sept. 10, 2016 in Cushing. He was 72.
A celebration of Bob’s life is planned for 2 p.m. Sunday in First Baptist Church, Cushing.
Bob was born June 2, 1944 in Mesquite, Texas, to the late Karl Marx Abshier and Myrtle Clara Mashore Abshier. He was raised and educated in Chickasha. He graduated in 1962 from Chickasha High School in 1962.
On March 8, 1965 in Pocasset, he married Marsha Lee Earl. They had two daughters.
Bob in 1967 earned a bachelor’s degree in business from Central State College in Edmond. After college, he went to work for The Hartford Insurance Company, moving with his family to Connecticut. Later, he became an insurance agent in Houston, Texas.
Ultimately, the family returned to Marsha’s hometown of Cushing.
Bob was trained in watchmaking and jewelry repair in Okmulgee. He and Marsha joined her parents, Henry and Ethel Earl, in their family business, Earl’s Jewelers. In later years, Bob also worked for Marsden Brothers, organizing promotional sales in other jewelry stores.
Bob lived a life committed to community service. He was active in the Jaycees, Lion’s Club, the Gideon’s Society and the Cushing Chamber of Commerce. He worked for many years as an election judge for Payne County Election Board and was a board member for the Cushing Housing Authority.
He was a member of First Baptist Church, where he served as deacon and took Sunday school attendance for many years.
Bob was passionate about RV camping, fishing, photography, and his grandchildren and great-grandchild. He loved community life in Cushing.
He always stopped to chat and find out what was happening in someone else’s life. He was widely respected as a man of integrity, generosity, and kindness.
Bob is survived by daughter, Kelly Abshier Allen and husband David; daughter Karen Abshier and partner Lisa Pierce; four grandchildren, Elizabeth Allen, Erin Allen and husband Beslan Khadziev, Emily Allen and husband Evan Allen; one great-grandchild, Millana Khadzieva; brother Elmer Abshier and wife Irene Goodman Abshier; a sister, Karliene Abshier Spradlin and husband Pete; sister-in-law Carol Earl Meade and husband Paul Meade; sister-in-law Kathryn Earl Calavan and husband Michael; and many beloved nieces, nephews, relatives and friends.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Marsha; and his parents, Karl and Myrtle.
In lieu of flowers, contributions to the Lion’s Club or the American Heart Association would be appreciated.
